(continued from previous page)

Matching clutch performance to track conditions is an important part of tuning the Mayhem. The available traction and roughness of the track play key roles in clutch selection. On low traction tracks, smooth acceleration is the key to make your buggy controllable during acceleration. On high traction tracks maximum acceleration is desired to achieve the quickest corner-to-corner times.

On smooth surfaces a clutch that has maximum lockup (no slippage) at high rpm is desired to achieve the fastest speeds. On bumpy tracks some clutch slippage, even at full throttle, is desired to allow the drivetrain to slip when a tire loads/ unloads over rough sections (much like a slipper clutch in electric buggies and trucks) promoting power on stability when accelerating through rough sections. The stock Mayhem™ carbon clutch shoes with the included .9mm springs is ideal for medium to slick bumpy tracks offering smooth acceleration. When the traction comes up, we've been using (and recommend) Mugen carbon clutch shoes with Mugen 1.0mm clutch springs as this combination gives greater punch and acceleration. When traction is really hooked up we use Mugen aluminum clutch shoes with Mugen 1.0mm or 1.1mm clutch springs. This combination gives outrageous acceleration but is recommended only when traction permits. Soon Sportwerks will be offering several different clutch shoe and spring combinations for all types of conditions. In the meantime, we recommend these clutch setups for the following conditions:

Sportwerks™ new EZ-On Clutch Spring Tool makes the frustrating job of installing /removing clutch shoes and springs a 5-second deal! The tool slips over the engine's shaft while a hardened steel "finger" slips under the clutch spring, unhooking it from the clutch nut with a twist of the handle. Then simply pull the clutch tool off the engine shaft and the shoe and spring will come off with the tool. I've been using one for several months and all my racing buddies jokingly threaten to steal it when I'm not looking. You've got to get one of these! (SWK9910)

NOTE: Some of the Mayhems in the first production run were mistakenly sent with optional lightweight clutch shoes installed. These shoes can allow the clutch to slip excessively. We recommend replacing these lightened shoes with standard weight shoes. If you'll call Horizon's Service Center at 217-355-9511 and give the serial number that's marked on the radio box, our staff will send you new clutch shoes free of charge. All future shipments will include the standard weight shoes.
